Abstract

1. The conditions of crack penetration into the backing from the film applied to this backing, acted upon by tensile stresses, are considered on the basis of the energy criteria. The dependence of the depth to which the crack penetrates is obtained as a function of the system parameters. 2. The conditions of crack traverse along the surface taking into account its penetration into the backing are obtained. The critical film thickness at which movement of the crack is possible decreases with the decreasing fracture toughness, both of the film as well as of the backing.
