Abstract
The first and most visible conclusion to be drawn from the articles combined in this volume is that space applications provide almost endless opportunities for dealing with problems related to sustainability. Space applications have become important, if not indispensable tools for supporting solutons to natural and human-made problems facing global society. Threats and risks can be projected and sustainability can be promoted through the use of satellite telecommunications, navigation and Earth observation. The articles show a tremendous wealth in single applications as well as perspectives for the future. The European Space Policy Institute has recently prepared a study entitled “Case for Space”217 which informs decision-makers about hundreds of space application opportunities. The study provides both striking examples of space applications and analyses of their foreseen political impact.KeywordsPolicy AreaSpace ApplicationIndispensable ToolIssue AreaPolitical ImpactThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
