Abstract

The available volume ( V a ) and intermolecular free length ( L f ) are computed employing the density ( ρ) data for terephthalyidene-bis-p-n-alkyl aniline (TBnA's) homologues series. The variation of molecular free length ( L f ) with temperature in a liquid crystal molecule (in different phases) and in a homologous series is discussed. The increment of available volume ( V a ) per methylene unit is found to be 6.04, 6.21 and 5.64 in isotropic, smectic-C and smectic-F phases respectively. The nature of molecular free length is analyzed and discussed with respect to the different expressions used for the estimation of this parameter.
