Abstract
The paper presents a comprehensive review of the most popular methods used for hot forging tools to increase their durability. The main directions of development of methods for increasing durability were indicated and for each of them the most important scientific results and discoveries were described. Only application-related works were considered important, which confirmed the applicability of the proposed solutions. Particular attention was paid to papers published during the last decade that have not been discussed yet. Among the discussed works, the authors’ contribution was also considered important, which was summarized and evaluated in the context of other works. Based on the analysis, it was shown which considered method can be useful in increasing the tool lifetime. A comparison was also made of the methods available in the literature with an indication of their purpose. The aspect of hybrid layers combining several surface engineering techniques simultaneously has been widely discussed. All statements were confirmed experimentally or by reference to appropriate sources in the available literature.
