Abstract

A McLean-Anderson experimental design for mixtures was used to design formulations for an automotive grade sheet molding compound (SMC). With the use of the Scheffe special cubic model, a predictive equation has been calculated to predict the coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) for an automotive grade SMC. The experimentally designed formulations included four control factors: resin, initiator, filler, and glass. The range levels were chosen based on the criteria for an automotive grade SMC. CLTE predicted values versus observed values have residuals ranging from 0.03 to 14.9% deviation based on four test formulations. Qualitative predictions were determined based on experimental work from various types of resin and glass.
