Abstract

ABSTRACTWe propose a simple approach to generate complex ultrawideband (UWB) pulse signal. The proposed system consists of a tunable laser source, phase modulator, an optical bandpasss filter, and photodetector. The light source is phase‐modulated by an electrical Gaussian pulse train via phase modulator. The UWB pulses are generated in the process of nonlinear phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion, equal to a high‐pass microwave photonic filter in frequency domain. By locating the carrier at different position, UWB pulses with different shape and frequency components are obtained. Experimental measurements in both time and frequency domains are presented. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:2780–2784, 2014
