Abstract

The current state of affairs in the research, development, and production sector in Russia with an emphasis on the role played by the Russian Academy of Sciences is presented. The competitive strength of the Academy is assessed relative to the rest of the national research-and-development sector and to its European counter-parts. Regeneration of the system of applied-research institutes and production plants is proposed as the primary task for the government to carry out in this area. The objective must be achieved as soon as possible if we are to maintain Russia’s status as an industrial power.
