Abstract

We have studied a field-induced transition of the mixed Ising- XY antiferromagnet Fe 0.50Co 0.50TiO 3 by magnetization and neutron scattering measurements. When we apply magnetic field H parallel to the hexagonal a-axis, both quantities show the hysteretic behavior due to the cooling condition, ZFC and FC. Further, when H exceeds a critical value, a phase transition, such that the XY spin component increases while the Ising one decreases, is induced only in the ZFC state accompanied by a spin-flop transition. We consider that the coupling between the Ising and the XY spin component through the off-diagonal terms is important for this novel transition.
