Cuba is the largest island in the Greater Antilles, has 59 living species of mammals, and has been considered the most diverse island in the Caribbean. The study of mammalian distributions and taxonomy on the island was started by Dr. Silva Taboada in 1974 with his classic book Las Especies Amenazadas de Vertebrados Cubanos (Silva Taboada 1974) and followed by additional contributions in mammalogy (Silva Taboada 1979, 1988, 2002), culminating in the appearance of this book in 2007. The 2 coauthors, both professional researchers, also have worked actively in the study of mammals for many years.
