Abstract

Fault current limiter (FCL) technology regulates fault current along with capability to cut down voltage sag problems raised by faults in system. A superconductor fault current limiter (SFCL) technology has a high efficiency and compressed design. Silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) based technology limits the fault current during whole fault operation but it requires milliseconds of time to begin with fault protection. A fast response metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET)/ insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based SFCL limits the fault current successfully. A thorough analysis and comparison of SFCL topologies on basis of switching elements has been presented in this paper. Simulation results shows that MOSFET based SFCL has fast response.
