Abstract
through its effect on sympathetic tone resulting in increased heart rate, blood pressure, and systolic wall stress, with minimal effect on systemic vascular resistance and stroke volume. 13–16 Thus, the resultant increase in myocardial oxygen demand may contribute to detection of less severe coronary artery disease. In the present study, 5 patients among the 17 with positive ESE-IH had 1-vessel coronary artery disease. This was in contrast to the 8 patients with positive ESE and no IH, of whom none had 1-vessel coronary artery disease (p 0.086). In this study, the addition of IH resulted in higher peak exercise and recovery heart rates, and improved the diagnostic yield of treadmill ESE. Combined treadmill ESE and IH allowed detection of less severe coronary artery disease.
