Abstract

A side-pumped Nd: YAG slab laser was used for a direct comparison of cw-diode-array pumping and quasi-cw lamp pumping. The absorption efficiency with respect to the incident pump power is 83% and 32%; the internal laser slope efficiency with respect to the absorbed power is 49% and 18%, respectively. The interferometrically measured heat deposited in the laser material relative to the absorbed power is ξ=0.4 (diode pumped) and 0.72 (lamp pumped). χ, the ratio of thermal energy to available optical energy is with 0.7 for diode pumping versus 2.6 for krypton arc lamp pumping about a factor of 4 more favourable for the narrowband diode excitation, a factor that is much larger than expected from the different quantum defects.
