Abstract
Abstract Cross sections obtained by the integration of prompt γ-ray spectra from the radiative capture of 14 MeV neutrons in a series of elements are presented and compared wilh the activation cross sections reported by different authors. In contrast to the activation cross-section values, which are scattered between 1 mb and 10 mb as a function of mass number, the integrated cross- section values show a smooth mass dependence. For targets with A ⪆ 50 the two cross sections agree within some 10 % only for nuclei near closed neutron shells. In other cases the activation cross sections are several times higher than the integrated ones.
