Abstract

This paper presents a comparative mathematical and harmonic analyses of three-phase voltage sourced inverters when employing two space vector modulation (SVM) voltage control algorithms, namely: 2D SVM and Hybrid 2D-3D SVM algorithms. The analysis compares the harmonic quality of the modulated output. The harmonic analysis covers the fundamental component in addition to the output harmonic spectrum, as well as the harmonic performance in view of the total harmonic distortion (THD) index. The presented mathematical description of 2D SVM clarifies the harmonics injected into the reference voltage, and additionally, addresses the increase of the dc bus utilization; however, the analysis shows clearly a degraded quality of the modulated output. MATLAB/Simulink simulation studies show that the hybrid 2D-3D algorithm offers better harmonic and quality performance over 2D SVM as the spectral content of the modulated output consists of less non-power spectral components.
