Abstract

The main aspects of sexual behavior (search for a sexual partner, copulation, reproductive isolation) are analyzed in two main taxonomic groups of ixodid ticks (Prostriata and Metastriata). A hypothesis on the evolution of sexual behavior in ixodid ticks is suggested, explaining the development of the system of chemical sexual communication typical of each taxonomic group.
