Abstract

We present a compact cold cesium beam source based on a two-dimensional plus magneto-optical trap with a hollow retarding light. The loss mechanism of the atom beam at the entrance of the pumping hole of the differential tube, which was neglected in previous similar configurations, is minimized in the configuration due to modification, resulting in higher pass efficiency for cold atoms. An atom beam flux of up to 2.5×1010  atoms/s is observed with a shorter transverse cooling length, which agrees with the numerical simulation qualitatively. The compact volume and high laser efficiency make it an ideal beam source for practical use.
