Background: Community service is an integrated program that involves professionals with the community where community empowerment is directly applied from the beginning to the end of the program. This study aims to introduce early childhood to speak English by using story telling. This activity was carried out at TPQ Masjid Baitul Baasyir in Tohudan Village Colomadu Karanganyar. Methods: The activity was held at the TPQ Masjid Baitul Ba'asyir Karanganyar from February to May 2025 and was attended by 15 children and their parents. The implementation is divided into three stages: the preparation stage (story development and creation of supporting materials), the implementation stage (pre-test, introduction of storytelling concepts, storytelling sessions, and post-test), and the evaluation stage (comparison of pre-test and post-test results, as well as observation of children’s participation). Results: The results of the community service evaluation showed an increase in children's English language skills by 3.07, from a pre-test score of 7.13 to a post-test score of 10.2. This improvement included fluency in speaking, vocabulary mastery, and understanding of story structure. Children and parents also showed enthusiasm and active involvement during the storytelling sessions. Conclusion: The storytelling method has been proven to improve the English language skills of young children. This activity is recommended for wider implementation in non-formal educational institutions such as TPQ and PAUD, and developed through modules and thematic stories, as well as the involvement of parents to strengthen the English language learning process from an early age.

Community services in Indonesia regarding waste handling and management: Mapping and bibliometric analysis
  • Nov 29, 2021
  • International Journal Of Community Service
  • Dave Mangindaan

Indonesia is a country with large area of land and sea, and therefore possesses vast amount of natural resources. However, the use of natural resources without proper handling or management of the waste causes a serious problem in Indonesia. Besides the lack of waste management facilities, local communities also exhibit insufficient awareness and knowledge in waste management. From the point of view of universities and higher education institutions, this issue might be resulted from few community development or community service, as well as lack of knowledge dissemination. In order to equalize the knowledge of the local communities with that of people of the large cities, then Indonesian universities perform community service (a part of the university tridarmas). With the intention to obtain effective and efficient community service, in this manuscript we describe mapping of publication of community service in the Scopus (a trusted database of international publication) in the field of waste management. From 2410 data from Scopus, they are sorted to obtain 38 publications related to the community service and community development for the waste management. The locations of the community services are mapped, as distributed in islands of Sumatera, Java, Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua. From the mapping, it can be observed that most of the published community service activities are concentrated in Java, Bali, and some at Sulawesi. It is therefore imperative to have future explorations at Kalimantan, Sumatera, and Papua. The published community services in Scopus commonly discuss about the developments of (1) recycling or upcycling, (2) socioeconomic evaluation, (3) performance evaluation, and (4) ecological evaluation of the waste management. Besides the mapping, bibliometric analysis is also performed where it is shown that the community service related to the waste management in Indonesia is highly tied with the sustainable development, rural areas, waste or wastewater treatment, sanitation, etc. where all these issues are important and urgent to obtain economic equality (especially for people of Kalimantan, Sumatera, and Papua) to achieve Gold Indonesia 2045.

  • Anita W Wachira + 2 more

The goal of this study was to explore the effect of Irrigations Schemes Development (as rooted in; Vision 2030, Kenya Big Four Agenda, ASTGS and National Irrigation Authority Strategic Plan 2019-2023) on capacity building and empowerment of communities. Specifically, the study sought to access the effect of irrigation scheme development on; Education and Training, Clean Water and Sanitation, Youth Access to Funds, Housing Type, Food Security, Job Diversity, Access to Health Care Services, Changing Demand, Irrigation Orientation and Water Harvest. Descriptive design was used as a road map of the study. A sample size of 395 respondents was drawn from a target population of 35,041 households living around the irrigation scheme in Mara Region, Tharaka-Nithi County-Kenya, subjected to a 95% confidence level. Convenience sampling was adopted to drum up participants. Primary data was collected using interview method. A semi-structured interview guide with Likert scale rating was used as a checklist. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data. Study results indicated that Development of Irrigation Schemes contributed to capacity building and empowerment of Kenyan communities by; facilitating access to clean water and sanitation within homesteads (77%) enabling sufficient food and balanced diet throughout the year (197; 56%). Statistically, the study showed that infrastructure was significantly associated with capacity building (ρ=0.03). In addition, the irrigation scheme improved the lifestyle of the locals through access to health care services and comfortable housing. From the income earned from farming, out of 395, only 105 (30%) and 47 (12%) could afford to educate their families to secondary and tertiary level respectively. According to the study, an acre of irrigated land employees an average of eight people on a full-time basis. The study highlighted challenges in water storage and maintenance which can be addressed by involving Kenyan government agencies, County government agencies, the private sector and other stakeholders in the development and provision of sufficient water storage facilities. From the results finding there is need for comprehensive research within the irrigation scheme through agricultural research and development to address the concerns of the future effects of chemical use on the health of the locals. The study recommends that local authorities renew the engagement of agricultural extension workers. Additionally, to counter the bargaining power of middlemen, farmer welfare organizational structures should be operationalized.

Learning Life Skills through English Materials: Integrating Life Skills in English Pedagogy
  • Dec 30, 2022
  • ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
  • Laela Hikmah Nurbatra + 1 more

John Dewey once said that “education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but an active and constructive process.” Accordingly, pedagogical processes should not simply be conducted by traditional lecturing, but rather, they should be constructive processes that gradually build the meaning-making process of the children through their active participation. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest materials that integrate English learning and LSE that are specifically designed for Indonesian children. As a follow-up project from the previous program, the current community service focuses on the implementation of life skills education (LSE) by integrating LSE with English learning in non-formal educational institutions in Malang, East Indonesia with Taman Bacaan Masyarakat (TBM) Wacan as a partner. In doing so, the community service program conducted three phases of activities: planning, implementation, and evaluation in collaboration with Taman Bacaan Masyarakat Wacan and student volunteers. As a result, the community service has mapped out fourteen English materials units, which were embedded into LSE. The units have four major themes, namely, self-awareness and self-esteem, inter- and intrapersonal skill, problem-solving, and time and conflict management. Each of the major themes was then explored, emphasized in units that focused on different purposes and tried to evaluate whether the material fit the children’s context or needed more adjustment. However, due to limited time and resources, only one unit of materials was tried out to identify its usability and its flexibility. Based on the findings, it is recommended that English learning materials can be integrated with LSE to not only improve the children’s performance in using the language but also their broader life skills in this competitive era.

  • Jan 22, 2024
  • Journal of Law and Sustainable Development
  • Ni Nyoman Reni Suasih + 3 more

Purpose: Indonesia is a country that still experiences problems in waste management, even ranking second in the world in terms of plastic waste in the sea. The waste problem also occurs in Bali, which is a province in Indonesia and is famous as a world tourist destination. Even though the tourism industry places cleanliness and beauty as the main elements. Realizing this, the government has issued various regulations and programs to tackle the waste problem in Bali. This research aims to analyze the public's response to waste management regulations based on probability rules. Theoretical framework: As settlements develop, waste management becomes more complex. So when the government and regional governments issue regulations related to waste and waste management, then if what is stated in the regulation is followed by waste management that is good for the environment, economically sustainable for a particular area and socially acceptable then it will certainly be followed and implemented by public. Methods: Where the analysis is carried out with the SMIC-Prob tool. Furthermore, a policy path (with MULTIPOL analysis) was also prepared to map each policy and action so that it fits into the three scenarios previously identified, namely source-based waste management, communal-based waste management, and government waste management. Findings: The results of the probability analysis (SMIC-Prob) show that the community's response to waste management regulations is to manage waste through TPS3R, and it can be said that the community still relies on waste management outside the household. Meanwhile, the results of the MULTIPOL analysis show that for source-based waste management and by the government, policies are needed in the construction of waste management facilities. Meanwhile, in communal-based waste management, the priority policies are institutional strengthening and community empowerment. Implications: The policy path has provided an overview of policy mapping and actions if waste management is source-based, communal-based, and implemented by the government. Where for source-based waste management and by the government, policies are needed in the construction of waste management facilities. Meanwhile, in communal-based waste management, the priority policies are institutional strengthening and community empowerment.

Therefore, the target of this community service activity is the Assyifa Taklim Assembly women group in the Pejeruk Village Environment, Ampenan District, Mataram City. The problem faced by partners is the economic situation of families who are in the middle economy, whereas meeting their daily needs requires increasing spending. The purpose of this activity is to: 1) improve the skills of the Assyifa Taklim Assembly group; and 2) as a home business opportunity for housewives, so as to grow and improve the family economy. Apart from that, marketing opportunities for household soap are wide open, due to the proliferation of laundry businesses in the Pejeruk Village Environment. The methods used to achieve these objectives are: 1) counseling/supplying of materials, this activity is carried out by providing material on how to make dish soap and detergent; 2) training by practicing soap making; and 3) evaluation to measure the absorption of the taklim assembly members on the material presented. This training activity involved all members of the Assyifa Taklim Assembly, totaling 32 people. In the community service activities, raw materials, work procedures, and calculation of production costs for making soap are explained.
