Abstract

ABSTRACTThe model of the community of practice is a recent theoretical approach in the field of sociolinguistics that is beginning to be applied to historical English language studies. This methodological investigation pursues the applicability of community-of-practice frameworks to networks of scribes and textwriters in late Middle English. The analysis then moves on to consider the relevance of the model for early processes of standardisation in English. Relating sociolinguistics and manuscript studies, this research suggests that the emergence of incipient standards in late Middle English occurs as part of the development of shared repertoire for communities of writers.
