Abstract

Certain student actions are considered as unacceptable type of behaviors in US schools that generally lead to direct disciplinary referrals with no prior intervention and without any further evaluation. Consequences for such direct referrals are usually interventions such as After School or Saturday detentions, in or out of school suspensions with out of school suspensions are being the most common consequences for unacceptable types of behaviors, and even expulsion in some severe cases. In this study, first, descriptions of such disciplinary actions that are most commonly encountered in US schools are reviewed. Second, commonly implemented sanctions due to first time offenses as well as offenses for a second time and more are described within the context of federal and state laws and policies of school districts.
