Abstract
Considers a two-dimensional field theory whose associated statistical mechanical system is a gas of strings of electric poles ('monopoles'). It is shown that the corresponding partition function is that of the Liouville theory in the presence of a uniform neutralizing background. A general mapping between arbitrary correlation functions of the two theories is established. The connection with the two-dimensional one-component plasma is also discussed.
