Abstract
A recent investigation [Scripta Mater 2005;53:335] concluded that there is no temperature memory effect (TME) in the R-phase to austenite phase transformation in NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs). That was different from previous findings for a NiTiFe SMA. We show that TME does occur in a NiTi SMA, but that the significance in the NiTi tested is much less compared with that reported in NiTiFe. We also found that, in this NiTi, the applied heating rate has a great influence on the appearance of the TME, and that the TME is only observable in the middle range of the transformation.
