Abstract

Polluted fluvial systems deserve the continuous attention of researchers due to the relevancy of the contaminants in rivers which are crucial to sustainable life. Perhaps due to the complexity inherent to fluvial systems and the intricacy of sediment compositional data, not all current studies on contamination in river-transported matter meet the state-of-the-art knowledge in the relevant disciplines. We comment on certain pitfalls in fluvial pollution studies, taking work by Pavlović et al. (2019) as an example. We specifically stress the need for judgment and carefulness in sediment sampling and interpretation of sediment composition. These provide two examples of the most common and persistent challenges for fluvial pollution research.
