Abstract

ObjectiveTransition between the paediatric and adult environments is often a challenge for young patients with severe diseases. The objective of this qualitative study was to define and identify descriptive characteristics of the transition by interviewing paediatric psychologists. MethodTen psychologists responded to a semi-structured research interview that was audiotaped. ResultsThe thematic analysis of the verbatim revealed common themes among participants regarding the representation of the transition as well as the facilitators and obstacles encountered in their work. DiscussionThis research has highlighted new elements in the work of psychologists with regards to the transition process such as clinical judgment, interpersonal aspects and therapeutic alliance.
