Abstract

Surgery of the bowel that results in a stoma, whether temporary or permanent, is designed to improve the patient′s current situation in removing disease, reducing pain and improving health. The ability of the patient with a stoma to adapt to the physical and psychological trauma of stoma surgery is demonstrated by the many patients who return to their everyday activities and relationships. The loss of control over elimination and the use of a stoma appliance add to the stress that patients experience during their admission to hospital. Sources of stress in patients admitted to hospital, such as threats to body integrity and comfort, are well documented. There is an extensive array of stoma appliances available on the drug tariff and the wide choice can be bewildering for the community nurse and general practitioner. However, modern appliances are continually changing and being updated and this article looks at an evaluation of a new range of closed and drainable pouches, the Freestyle.® Vie, developed by Welland Medical, which aim to give the ostomate a more comfortable, skin-friendly and functional pouch.
