Abstract

Combustion synthesis (CS) reactions for the formation of TiC and Cr 3C 2 have been the object of previous studies; however, the simultaneous production of these two materials had not yet been investigated. In this work, reactions between the elemental powders (Ti, Cr and C) were carried out in order to determine the CS parameters and compare them with thermodynamic calculations. It was found possible to synthesize carbides from elemental mixtures of Ti+Cr+C. Single phase solid solutions or (Ti,Cr)C ss–Cr 3C 2 composites were obtained. The thermodynamic modeling, although it did not consider the formation of the solid solutions, yielded reasonable results when compared with actual measured combustion parameters.
