Abstract

The use of a CRMT rocking calorimeter equipped with a microbomb for the determination of the standard enthalpies of combustion of small samples (5 to 10 mg) of hygroscopic solid substances is described. The sample pellets are enclosed in small containers (5 to 10 mg) made from commercial polyethene foil (thickness: 0.05 mm). The technique is applied to the study of the solid ω-alkanediols HO(CH 2) n OH (6⩽ n⩽10) and their standard molar enthalpies of combustion and formation in the condensed state at 298.15 K are reported. The uncertainties of the enthalpies of combustion (about 0.1 per cent) are even lower than those found with the previously described procedure for liquid substances and comparable with uncertainties found in classical combustion calorimetric studies.
