Abstract

The objective of dynamic traffic management is to provide real-time control and route guidance to motorists to optimize urban traffic network performance. This paper develops approaches for the integration of traffic control and traffic assignment. The proposed approaches consist of an integration of the different levels of the RT-TRACS (Real Time Traffic Control System) hierarchy for traffic signal control with the predictive ability of dynamic traffic assignment models. The approaches can be implemented in many urban areas with existing centralized traffic control equipment and operating software.
