Abstract

Although several of the standard methods for determining the configuration of aryl glucosides cannot be applied to the protoaphins, the action of glucosidases of known specificity indicates them to be β. A number of aphid species, some of which contain protoaphins and some which do not, all contain glucosidases capable of hydrolysing them. These enzymes differ, however, in their action on peri-substituted 1-naphthyl glucosides and cannot readily be used for purposes of configurational assignment. A number of these glucosides have been synthesised for the first time.
