Abstract

The Colombian National Defense System against Large Scale Events (SIRENA for its Spanish Name) seeks to implement new generation System Integrity Protection Schemes (SIPS) through the deployment of a WAMPAC system (Wide Area Measurement, Protection and Control System) to avoid or mitigate the impact of major events in the Colombian Interconnected Power System. The paper discusses the need to implement these systems and recommends the scope of its application. In addition, the conceptual design of the proposed WAMPAC system, envisioned applications and the current state of the prototype installed in the Colombian system are presented. The project is framed within the Smart Grid initiative of XM S.A. E.S.P. (The Colombian Independent Power System Operator).
