Abstract

A pilot study on the usability of collinear laser spectroscopy in fast beams for metrological purposes is reported. The method combines high resolution and high sensitivity, and allows the measurements on free atoms without perturbing interactions. The Balmer-α line was choosen for this purpose. Possible applications include the determination of the Rydberg constant, the quadratic Doppler effect and high precision measurements of high voltages.
