Abstract

Introduction: The hemostatic efficacy and safety of bipolar electrosurgical devices has been widely studied with significant variations in vessel sealing strength being reported. Variations in burst pressure strengths are commonly attributed to differences in sealing technology and vessel diameter. However, the strength of vessel seals may be intrinsic to the vessels themselves. Blood vessel elasticity/distensibility is intrinsically dependent on the vessel wall structure. An important aspect of the vessel wall structure is the integration of elastin and collagen within the tissue.
