Abstract

Radiation is just one of the latest strategies to outfox the tenacious common cold viruses. Recent surveys indicate that acute respiratory illnesses account for more than half of all acute disabling disease, with colds being the most common of such disorders ( National Health Survey , US Dept of Health, Education, and Welfare publication No. 79-1560. 1979:3). Colds occur at the rate of 100 million disabling cases annually, causing about 250 million days of restricted activity, and 30 million days lost at work or school. Sales of over-the-counter cold remedies amount to more than $1 billion annually, and these remedies apparently are used to treat two to five colds per American each year.
