Highlights

  • Toscana virus (TOSV) is a sandfly borne virus which shows a wide distribution in the Mediterranean basin [1]

  • TOSV is the most pathogenic among the phleboviruses transmitted by sand flies; it can affect the central nervous system and cause meningitis and meningoencephalitis [1]

  • Three distinct lineages of TOSV have been identified so far: A, B, and C, at the outset of this study, only lineage C had been identified in Croatia in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of a patient presenting with meningitis [4]

Summary

Introduction

Toscana virus (TOSV) is a sandfly borne virus (genus Phlebovirus, family Phenuiviridae) which shows a wide distribution in the Mediterranean basin [1]. Since TOSV has been isolated or detected in France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and Corsica either from sand flies or human samples [3]. Sand flies collected in Croatia were tested for the presence of TOSV RNA and for subsequent identification of TOSV genetic lineages.
