Abstract

The crystal and molecular structure of the dihydrate of [Co(terpy) 2] [NO 3] 2 was determined. The complex crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4/ a with a = 12.408(2) and c = 38.867(6) Å. The structure was refined using 2272 independent reflections to a final R = 0.058 and R w = 0.081. The structure consists of Co(terpy) 2 2+ cations, disordered NO 3 − anions, and two watet molecules of crystallization. The cation exhibits compression along the molecular z axis along with significant elongation along the x and y axes with almost identical bond lengths (2.189(3) and 2.180(3) Å). These are the longest CoN bonds observed in a cobalt(lI) bis- terpyridine complex to date.
