Abstract

• Various furfuryl alcohol copolymers were synthesized. • Copolymerization showed improved mechanical strength. • Fracture surface of copolymers show ductility. Furfuryl alcohol resins with a varying amount of comonomer inhibiting the conjugation and crosslinking reactions of the resin are synthesised. The pre-resins are briefly characterised to ensure their properties besides composition are similar. Afterwards the pre-resins are cured and their mechanical properties are investigated. There was a markable increase in strength and strain to failure of the cured resin upon addition of 5% DMFA.
