Abstract

The activity and the mechanism of CO oxidation on PdO, RuO2 and CuO with and without the deposition of Au nanoparticles (NPs), of which MO bond strength increases with this order, were systematically investigated to elucidate the reason for the enhancement of the activity due to the deposition of gold NPs. The deposition on PdO and on RuO2 effectively did not enhance the activity, whereas the deposition on CuO clearly enhanced the activity. The change of the rate controlling step caused by the variation of the interaction between the product CO2 and oxygen vacancy with increasing MO bond strength of support oxides correlates with the enhancement of the catalytic activity. The lowering of activation energy for the reduction of lattice oxygen existing around the contact interface of gold/metal oxide with CO was the main role of Au NPs in the enhancement of CO oxidation.
