Abstract
Translate article icon Translate Article Star icon

Co-creation has gained increasing scholarly attention as an approach for involving tourists, residents, and stakeholders in shaping destination image. However, existing research is fragmented, lacking an integrated review of its conceptual foundations, thematic evolution, and implications. This study aims to address this gap by mapping the intellectual structure and emerging trends of co-creation and destination images.A bibliometric and thematic analysis was conducted on 72 peer-reviewed publications indexed in Scopus, using CiteSpace for co-citation and keyword co-occurrence mapping, complemented by Scopus AI for trend identification. The analysis revealed four thematic clusters: destination branding, stakeholder engagement, emotional experience, and digital interaction. Results demonstrate that co-creation operates as a multidimensional, layered process, enhancing emotional attachment, destination loyalty, and brand value, rather than a single experiential design activity. The study concludes that co-creation plays a structurally significant role in destination branding and stakeholder engagement, as demonstrated by the dominant clusters in the bibliometric and thematic analyses.By synthesising existing knowledge and identifying research gaps, this paper offers a comprehensive reference for academics and practitioners, reinforcing the relevance of co-creation in destination management.

  • Jan 18, 2021
  • Information
  • Janire Domínguez-Azcue + 3 more

The destination image is a complex construction in which the different sources of information consulted are decisive. Among these information sources, we can find films, which have a relevant function to create destination images. Films are one of the factors that most influences people in their motivation to travel to a destination. The academic literature on film tourism has grown considerably in recent years, but an updated revision is needed. Due to this fact, the main contribution of this paper is the proposal of an updated review of the academic literature focused on film tourism and destinations and their management implications. The general objective of this research is to analyse the existing literature, systematising the relationships that exist between films, film tourism, destination image, and tourist destination. To this end, a systematic review of the literature has been carried out, with two aims: on the one hand, a review of the existing literature from a descriptive perspective, showing the main publications, authors and topics, and on the other hand, a review from a thematic perspective. The results of the latter will be addressed in the discussion and conclusions. The results of the descriptive analysis highlight the significant growth in the literature analysed over the last 45 years, especially between 2005 and 2015. They also underline that the most studied topics are film destinations, marketing and destination image. The results of the thematic analysis highlight the importance of films and series as important information sources on the creation of destination images. The thematic analysis also provides information on the negative and positive aspects of film destination management.

  • Poorva Jain + 2 more

Purpose Green advertising is essential in changing consumer attitudes toward green marketing policies and practices followed by companies. Hence, studying green advertising from a scientific research point of view has become an urgent necessity. Previous reviews have considered only the term “green advertising” for reviews and analysis. By considering all terms related to green advertising such as eco-advertising, sustainable advertising, environmental advertising, biological advertising and organic advertising, the present research conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and identified themes and research gaps from the literature. Design/methodology/approach The paper followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework for selecting and shortlisting articles. The bibliometric analysis is carried out in two phases: performance analysis and scientific mapping. The bibliometric analysis is followed by thematic analysis to analyze related themes and identify future research gaps. R software and VOSviewer were used to tabulate and run the analysis. Scopus database was used as a database search engine. Only 334 Scopus articles in the English language from 1992 to 2024 were considered. Findings The analysis suggests that the number of publications has increased exponentially in 2018. The USA and China accounted for leaders in publication as well as citations. The top institutions publishing researches on the topic were from the USA and Australia. In the co-word analysis, five themes were identified: advertising content, green marketing, environment attributes, regulations and skepticism. Thematic analysis identified five themes dominating the green advertising literature: consumer behavior and purchase intentions, green brand management, digital and social media, greenwashing and culture. Research limitations/implications The research outcome calls for further efforts by managers, policymakers and practitioners to formulate attractive green advertisements, based on identified themes. Future research gaps were found and various important implications were made for managers, marketers and advertisers investing in green advertising, conducive to sustainability and sustainable development from a management perspective. Originality/value The study extends previous literature by conducting an updated bibliometric analysis on green advertising. The study has taken into account an extensive keyword search by including related terms to green advertising to widen the scope of analysis. The study captures interesting insights into green marketing, green advertising, and its theories, methodologies, and variables involved.

How do Tourism Stakeholders Co-Create Destination Images with Photos on Social Media?
  • May 30, 2024
  • Journal of Travel Research
  • Yuchen Zhao + 1 more

Previous research overwhelmingly emphasizes discrepancies in constructing destination images from different stakeholders but ignores the potential attempt for convergence. From the perspective of symbolic convergence theory, this study explores how tourism stakeholders co-create destination images with photos on social media by occupying different roles. A blended approach combining content and thematic analysis is employed to analyze submitted photos and text to a destination branding project in Macau. Results show that the themes of tourist-generated photos reflect contrasting destination images of Macau—a peaceful versus hedonistic destination. Nonetheless, these contrasting images do not lead to a disjointed overall image but bring unique pieces to complete the destination image puzzle, which contributes to a favorable destination appeal. In the co-creation process, the destination management organization (DMO) selects photos according to its strategic goals, while online viewers express their love and support through posting comments.

  • Xialei Duan + 1 more

Purpose Cultural-specific video games are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Using “Black Myth: Wukong,” a Chinese mythology-based game as the research context, this study aims to examine the role of exoticism and cultural authenticity in virtual cultural adaptation, and analyze how these elements collectively influence foreign players’ destination perceptions and travel intentions. Design/methodology/approach Online survey was conducted through Prolific, collecting data from 514 foreign players. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the relationships between gaming experience, cultural adaptation, destination image and behavioral intentions. Thematic analysis was followed to discover the mechanism of cultural adaptation and visit intentions to China. Findings The SEM results demonstrate that game-induced cultural adaptation significantly enhances destination images, subsequently influencing players’ behavioral intentions toward the represented culture. Exoticism and authenticity serve as key mediators in this process, facilitating virtual cultural adaptation through gaming experiences. Thematic analysis shows that players actively seek game-related information, learn culture presented in the game and develop specific travel intentions toward destinations prominently featured in their gaming experience. Originality/value This study extends cross-cultural adaptation theory to virtual environments by integrating it with the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model in gaming contexts. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is among the first to examine how culturally-specific video games can function as tools for cross-cultural adaptation and tourism promotion. It offers insights for both game developers and destination marketers in leveraging digital media for destination image and tourism promotion.

  • Mar 1, 2024
  • International Journal of Advances in Applied Sciences
  • Putu Chris Susanto + 2 more

<p><span>This study applies sentiment and thematic content analyses based on natural language processing (NLP) to gain valuable insights into the perceived image of Bali as a tourist destination. This study addresses the gap in how to realize the benefits of big data analytics in applied research, by using more approachable tools for researchers with limited programming skills and coding experience. A total of 6,800 TripAdvisor reviews of Bali’s top 12 tourist attractions between May 2019 and April 2023 were scrapped. The authors used Bardeen.ai for data mining and Atlas.ti for qualitative data analyses. Sentiment analysis revealed an overwhelmingly positive sentiment (70.4%) towards Bali’s tourist attractions, indicating a positive destination image. Post-pandemic tourists tend to express more positive sentiments in their reviews compared to pre-pandemic. Thematic content analysis indicated that positive sentiments are strongly related to satisfaction, positive experiences, enjoyment, and excitement, while environmental concerns and dissatisfaction are potentially harmful to Bali’s destination image. The study provides valuable insights into tourists’ emotional sentiments, perceptions, and thematic patterns of behavior, which can inform tourism marketers and destination strategists, and contribute to the larger discussion of utilizing big data analytics in tourism marketing research.</span></p>
