Abstract

On October 30, 2009, CMS announced the final rule containing changes to the payment policies under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule applicable for calendar year 2010. The final rule, which appeared in the November 25, 2009, Federal Register, implements certain provisions of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008. One of the notable changes in the final rule is the formal adoption of the requirement that, beginning in 2012, suppliers of the technical component of “advanced diagnostic imaging services” must be accredited by a CMS-approved accreditation organization (AO) to receive reimbursement from Medicare for the technical component of such advanced diagnostic imaging services. The new accreditation requirement is codified in section 1843(e) of the Social Security Act.
