Abstract

Emerging applications like smart grids and the Internet of Things pose new challenges to industrial systems. A drawback of OPC UA in the context of cloud-based applications are its client-server based communication concept and challenges due to firewalls, proxies, dynamic IP addresses, NATs and client-lookup strategies. Our aim is to interleave OPC UA with web and cloud technologies. We extended the communication concept of OPC UA and provide an evaluation of various protocols that serve as an additional transport layer underneath OPC UA.
