One of the notable events in the military medical history of the Southwest Pacific was the widespread disability of troops because of dermatological disease. Most of the dermatological casualties consisted of those suffering from what was ultimately called atypical lichen planus, from eczematoid dermatitis and from a severe form of exfoliative dermatitis.
