Climate justice: implications for social work in Brazil
This article discusses the relationship between poverty and disasters, highlighting the climate injustice that affects Brazilians and refugees in the country. The article collects and analyzes secondary data from documents and literature on the role of social workers in emergencies caused by climate impacts in contemporary Brazil. It also examines documents and data from national and international indicator monitoring platforms. It analyzes the intersection between economic and social policy, considering disasters as social and anthropogenic phenomena, and proposes strengthening social work in the face of risks based on a socioeconomic and environmental diagnosis. The results indicate the need for objective and preventive responses because social work is still mostly emergency related and lacks the technical apparatus to mitigate risks. This gap aggravates such challenges as internal migration driven by the impacts of climate change in Brazil.

The description of the role of social workers is considered important because the initiator of the formation of a village tourism program in Sukaratu Village is the social worker itself, so that if the role can be fully described it is not impossible the role of social workers. In the village of Sukaratu can be adopted by other communities in different regions that have the same commitment to community development. These findings indicate that the role of community social workers at the identification stage is more facilitative and educative. At the socialization stage, the role of social workers is more dominant in practicing the role of representation and education. Subsequent roles in the social worker planning stage play a more facilitative role and in the implementation stages of social workers practice more training (educational) skills. Then at the evaluation stage the social worker does not perform a representational role, but rather performs a facilitation role to facilitate the evaluation procedure and the various aspects that must be in the evaluation process. While the barriers experienced by social workers in implementing the community development process in Sukaratu Village is in increasing the number of people involved in the implementation of representational roles.

Youth unemployment remains a persistent social issue in Nigeria, despite the implementation of social welfare policies and proactive measures by stakeholders in the social sector. Current interventions often do not match ongoing social actions hence the need for multisectoral approaches to address the problem. This study investigates the roles of social workers in bridging the gap between social policy and social action in order to mitigate youth unemployment in Nigeria. A correlational survey research design was utilised for this study. The study's population consisted of 6,047 registered social workers and the sample size of 360 participants was calculated using the Krejcie and Morgan table. The study employed a multi-stage sampling technique, incorporating disproportionate simple random sampling, purposive sampling, and snowball sampling, to select participants from the Social Work associations across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. The validity of the research instrument was confirmed by expert scholars, and a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.86 was obtained from a pilot study involving participants not included in the main sample. The questionnaire was administered electronically and responses analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study identified a relationship between social policy and social action but there is no synergy between policy formulation and social action. Consequently, the roles of social workers were not integrated into the interactions between social policy and social action. The government, Social Work professional associations, and other stakeholders should incentivise social workers to offer innovative interventions to unemployed youth in overcoming the challenges of unemployment and transitioning to entrepreneurship.

ABSTRACTThis article is a review of 50 selected peer-reviewed articles from 2004 to 2013. The texts are analysed with reference to Malcolm Payne’s model of the three-way discourse of social work, and the findings are discussed in relation to Brazil’s social and political background. The review of the articles reveals a general perspective on social work in Brazil as a profession aiming at social change through collective transformation, and a normative identity of social work as a profession with political implications. The texts written in Portuguese for a Brazilian audience are more inclined to promote explicit political perspectives on social work than the English texts. Ideological concepts such as democracy and universal rights expressed in the articles are challenged by competing views in Brazilian society. This is especially the case in discussions about the role of the third sector in Brazil. Social work as a concept cannot be taken for granted. The experience of extreme inequalities that Brazil shares with several other Latin American countries makes it necessary to consider historical and social characteristics in order to understand the analytical perspectives that national and international academics employ when studying social work in Brazil.

- Palliative & supportive care
The importance of palliative care in cancer care is underscored, yet there is a significant gap in research specifically focusing on the role of social workers in palliative cancer care. This qualitative study aims to better articulate the specific roles of social workers within palliative oncology settings. Data were collected by semi-structured Zoom interviews with social workers in palliative cancer care between November 2023 and January 2024. Thematic analysis was used to identify unique themes. Ten social workers in palliative cancer care were recruited for this study. Eight key themes related to social workers' role emerged from the interviews. These were the following: (1) mapping out holistic needs through a biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment, (2) providing individual and family counseling, (3) patient and family psychoeducation, (4) resource identification and referral, (5) building communication bridges between patients, families, and oncology teams, (6) promoting patient and family engagement and voice in shared decision-making in cancer care, (7) providing anticipatory grief and bereavement counseling, and (8) strengthening team resilience and fostering well-being. This study builds upon prior work by focusing specifically on the roles of palliative care social workers in oncology. The findings highlight the multifaceted roles of social workers, demonstrating their capacity to deliver holistic care to cancer patients, families, and healthcare providers to enhance quality of care. The findings may help inform the development of training curricula and practice standards for the subspecialty of oncology-focused palliative social work.

Social workers provide care to patients and families in the adult critical care unit. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to more clearly identify the role of the social worker practicing in the intensive care unit. We conducted a comprehensive search of the literature using the Pubmed, Embase, ISI, Scopus, and Social Work s databases using the terms “intensive care,” “critical care,” and “social work.” Articles were selected for review if they met the following criteria: formal studies or opinion papers whose primary focus was the role or scope of practice of the social worker in the adult critical care unit. Articles were selected and reviewed independently by two social work investigators. Our search retrieved 550 potentially relevant articles. Twelve full-text articles were deemed eligible for abstracting. Three of the articles were studies that examined different aspects of social work practice including implementation of a family assistance program, social work response to anxiety levels of families in critical care and common activities of critical care social workers. Nine articles were primarily opinion pieces. All of the opinion articles described psychosocial support and counseling as a primary role of critical care social work. Other frequently identified roles were crisis intervention, psychosocial assessment, facilitating communication, end-of-life care, and practical assistance. There is little empiric data describing the role of the critical care social worker. Consistent themes from the articles identified include the role of social workers as counseling professionals, facilitators of communication, and resource agents. Further research to identify formal assessment tools and outcome studies of specific counseling techniques will provide important information for best practice guidelines in this area.

Peeters J. A comment on ‘Climate change: Social workers’ roles and contributions to policy debates and interventions'In this commenting article, I present several critical remarks about Lena Dominelli's contribution to the issue of climate change and its implications for social work.1 In my view, her article lacks three important considerations. First, I argue that the issue of climate change should be addressed as part of a broader, fundamental challenge: the transition of the growth‐based economic system upon which our society is built. Second, within a context of social and ecological injustice, dealing with climate change inevitably requires a dimension of social struggle. Third and lastly, I emphasise social work's role in challenging the social, political and economic structures and processes that bring about climate change.

The article presents the pathway of a pioneer – black Brazilian social worker Dona Ivone Lara – as a starting point for establishing some mediations that allow for an understanding of the ethno-racial issue in social work in Brazil. The first part of the article briefly describes Ivone Lara’s career pathway and the second sets out some reflections on the permanence of the ethno-racial issue within social work in Brazil, as evidenced by the invisibility of black women within the profile of the profession. The article reaffirms the importance of revealing the dominant racial ideology in Brazil that shaped the genesis of social work. If the ethno-racial debate is fundamental to the understanding of Brazilian societal formation, it is important to understand how social work has dealt with the theme along its trajectory.

This paper provides a critical analysis of the Beckford Report and its implications for social work and the personal social services. Four interrelated themes are explored: the relationship between social work practice, statutory responsibilities and the law; the attitudes of social workers towards children and families; the social work skills required; and the assumptions that are made about child abuse and the role of social workers. This is then related to recent research findings in the area of policies and decision making in child care. It concludes by arguing that the report is in great danger of misdirecting our attentions from the major issues concerned with social work with children at risk.

Bioethics and biomedical ethics are defined. Common bioethical concepts, exemplary moral values, fundamental ethical principles, general ethical theories, and approaches to moral reasoning are reviewed. The scope of topics and issues, the nature of practice situations in bioethics, and social work roles on organizational bodies that monitor and respond to bioethical issues are summarized, as are trends in bioethics. Practice contexts, from beginning to end of life, are highlighted with biopsychosocial facts, ethical questions and issues, and implications for social work—a profession uniquely positioned in giving bioethics a social context.

Summary The revised global definition for social work promotes the profession’s commitment to social change and development, social cohesion and the empowerment and liberation of people. By reviewing the implications of this definitional shift and locating this within existing influential social work ontological models, the implications for social work within global and national contexts are critically reviewed. Findings The changes to the global definition, along with recognition of the importance of strengthening knowledge and theory, encourage critical review of the implications of a shift from an emphasis on individual approaches to the importance of collective and macro perspectives in social work intervention. The location and exploration of these debates using existing key ontological frameworks and socio-economic contexts encourages critical reflection on the purpose, role and function of social work in society. Implications Social work must critically review what it means by, along with the implications of, the profession’s commitments. The profession needs to consider how theory, its academic discipline and social work interventions support these commitments. The critical examination of ontological frameworks, indigenous knowledge and social work interventions is vital to inform social work education and practice to enable a reinvigorated profession able to address the contemporary challenges of both society and individuals.

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Social workers collaborate with a wide range of healthcare providers in clinical trial teams, yet their roles may not always be understood or supported by team members. It is currently unknown how social workers and multidisciplinary team members perceive social workers’ roles in the clinical trial context. Methods: Using a group case-study approach, social workers, core medical team members, and allied healthcare workers (n = 19) completed in-depth interviews to discuss the roles of social workers in a cancer clinical trial setting.Findings: Social workers discussed their role as primarily patient-centered, perceiving themselves to be a counselor, patient advocate, and conduit. They also described areas of perceived limited role contribution. Other members of the multidisciplinary teams viewed the roles of social workers to be focused on being a conduit and coordinator.Discussion: We found discordance in the way that social workers and their team members view the roles of social workers in clinical trials. Our data suggest that structural and interpersonal barriers may prevent social workers from working to the full extent of their license in a clinical trial context. Implications, future research, and suggestions for interventions to more fully integrate social workers into clinical trial settings are discussed.

Remote indigenous communities are one of the targets of social work intervention in Indonesia. Various community empowerment policies and programs as well as various psychosocial intervention approaches have been implemented to help resolve their various economic, social, educational and health problems. This research aims to analyze the role and challenges of social workers in empowering remote communities. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research results show that the role of social workers is very important in empowering Remote Indigenous Communities (KAT). With their roles as enablers, brokers, mediators, advocates, educators and protectors, social workers are able to overcome various challenges faced by KAT, including limited resources and social stigma. An approach that is sensitive to the culture and needs of indigenous communities, as well as collaboration with various related parties, is key in ensuring the success of the KAT empowerment program. Thus, the role of social workers is crucial in ensuring that empowerment efforts are carried out effectively, sustainably, and respect cultural diversity and human rights.
