Abstract

Atrial flutter involves a macroreentrant circuit within the atria. It is characterized on an electrocardiogram by little or no isoelectric interval, reflective of continuous atrial activation throughout the duration of the flutter circuit. While it was historically defined as typical, reverse typical, or atypical, more descriptive terminology has become favoured with increased understanding of specific flutter circuits. Atrial flutter circuits have now been described to involve numerous structures within the right and left atria. This chapter presents a review of the classification of these arrhythmias and their mechanisms.
