Abstract

Operation of circuit breaker is an essential safety feature of a power system since it prevents wide-blackout from circuit breaker failure. The operation is required to be checked regularly to prevent blackout in a power system. However, the existing diagnostic system is inefficient due to its manual selection according to the number of operations in a device, and has no concrete diagnostic technique for a weak point, which hinders accurate diagnostic for the circuit breaker. In this paper, we propose a circuit breaker diagnostic system using digital substation IED to guarantee a high efficiency of a facility diagnostic in smart grid industry. The system is more reliable since it selects a target of diagnostic service automatically by using the operation data of circuit breaker received by the IED. In addition, the system provides a secure monitoring service reporting an alarm by measuring the time of opening or closing occurred by the operation of the circuit breaker when abnormal behaviors are detected. We increase the efficiency of the diagnostic service through a function that determines a target to be checked depending on conditional operation data of circuit breaker, enabling the system to detect abnormal behavior of circuit breaker by monitoring a weak point.
