Abstract
Church Slavonic is a generic term for a set of closely related, highly conservative varieties of Slavic language used for liturgical purposes and, in the medieval period, as a literary language. These varieties developed from Old Church Slavonic on a local basis and were subjected to processes of standardization and subsequent dissemination. The main variety in use today is Russian Church Slavonic.
