Objective To evaluate the health status of Hainan centenarians and compare the gender disparity, and to determine whether the'male-female health-survival paradox’is present among them. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on the health status and gender disparity of individuals aged 100 and over in Hainan province from June 2014 to December 2016.Data of sociodemographics, lifestyles as well as health-related parameters were collected. The multi-dimensional health assessment of centenarians was conducted based on the recognition of standard on Chinese healthy elderly in 2013. Results A total of 940 centenarians(men 18.6%, women 81.4%)were included. The prevalences of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia were 66.1%, 9.8%, and 21.2%, respectively, while no significant gender difference was found.Male centenarians were more independent in activity of daily living than did female centenarians(41.1% vs.25.9%, P<0.001). The prevalences of dementia(7.7% vs.4.0%)and depression(33.6% vs.18.9%)were more dominant in females than in males.Multivariate logistic regression showed that the proportions of functional disability, depression and sleep disorders were higher in female centenarians than in male centenarians(P<0.05)after adjusting for general demographic characteristics, lifestyle and other health indicators. Conclusions Although the female proportion dominates the centenarian population, female general health states are worse than male centenarians.More attentions on physical and mental health should be paid to the female centenarians. Microparticles in Stokes Flows – Symposium in Honor of Françcois Feuillebois' 65th Birthday was held from 21–24 August 2011 in Warsaw, Poland. There were 43 participants from Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Tunisia, United Kingdom and the USA. They presented 5 invited lectures, 25 contributed talks and 9 posters. The abstracts can be found at microparticles2011.ippt.pan.pl. The subjects were divided into three parts and 13 sessions, listed below. Part I. A variety of particles.Sessions: sedimentation at non-Brownian time scale, Brownian and hydrodynamic interactions of non-spherical particles, active particles, permeable particles, deformable particles and biosystems.Part II. Particles and interfaces. Sessions:confined multiparticle systems, hydrodynamic interactions in confined systems, single particle under confinement,particle-interface interactions, slip at interfaces, slip in suspensions.Part III. Stokes flows and beyond. Sessions: inertial effects, texture and self-assembly.At the end of each session, presentations were followed by extensive discussions (two thirds of the presentation time). Also, two round-table general discussions took place, Methods of solving the Stokes equations - which when? and Challenges in microhydrodynamics. This volume contains both original contributions and reviews. There were at least two referees per paper: one participating in the conference, and the other not. I would like to thank all the referees for their work, the Polish Academy of Sciences, Centre national de la recherche scientifique and the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciencesfor supporting in part the conference, Anna Myłyk, Agnieszka Słowicka and Krzysztof Zembrzycki for the weeks spent organizing the symposium, and all the conference participants for their presentations and discussions of the highest scientific quality. Happy Birthday, Françcois Feuillebois! This volume of Journal of Physics: Conference Series is dedicated to our friend and colleague Françcois Feuillebois. The symposium Microparticles in Stokes Flows was organized to celebrate his 65th birthday. Françcois presented a special lecture, entitled Influence of wall slip in dilute suspensions [1], which was followed by a birthday dinner, with an after-dinner speech given by John Hinch. The symposium participants, and those who could not join the meeting, all wish Françcois all the best for his 65th birthday, and thank him for sharing with us his knowledge, and motivating us to solve interesting problems related to motion of particles in fluid flows. An illustration of Françcois's scientific interests was shown on the conference poster. The conference participants could participate in a contest, by submitting a written answer to the question ``What system is shown on the conference poster (equations, boundary conditions)?''. Francois was in charge of evaluating the answers to this quiz, and providing the explanation [3]. Transworld Research Network kindly provided the rewards: copies of the book co-edited by Francois [2]. The winners were Maciej Lisicki and Eric Climent. A third copy of this book was awarded to John Hinch, who (according to majority of the participants) had asked the most insightful questions during the conference.Maria L Ekiel-Jeżewska (Editor) Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, Pawi\\'nskiego 5B, 02-106 Warsaw, Poland Email: mekiel@ippt.pan.pl References [1] Feuillebois F, Ghalya N and Sellier A 2012 Influence of wall slip in dilute suspensions J. • Yao Yao + 18 more

Objective To study the correlation of lifestyle characteristics with thyroid nodules in a population-based sample of centenarians in Hainan. Methods The study was based on China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study (CHCCS) conducted in 18 cities and counties in Hainan province from 2014 to 2016. A group of multidisciplinary team interviewed and examined local centenarians with structured questionnaires and ultrasonography procedures. A total of 918 centenarians were analyzed after excluding those who refused ultrasonographic examinations or had relevant missing data. Thyroids of centenarians were examined by 3-year experienced sonographer, details on lifestyle characteristics and dietary habits were collected by standard procedure. Results Of the 918 centenarians, 683 (74.4%) had thyroid nodules under the ultrasonography procedures. The prevalence of thyroid nodules in different group of areca nut consumption varied significantly (P<0.05). In multivariate logistic regression model, the results showed female and areca nut intake were independently associated with thyroid nodules in centenarians (P<0.05). Conclusions The modifiable variables including areca nut intake as well as non-modifiable such as gender are independent determinants of thyroid nodules in centenarians. Further studies are warranted to explore and verify these associations in populations with different ranges of age. The career of writers, like that of trees, is often dateable by observable means. To write a play, or a full-length novel, would seem to require a fully operative, healthy body, more than usual physical and, usually, sexual energy, and a capacity for what one could call management, i.e. the capacity to organize material, to hold several themes together, and to take big architectonic views of the work in prospect. There are obvious exceptions to these generalizations, but a study of the lives of writers will usually find all these factors in place. I am not speaking of those whose output is small or limited. I am not talking, for example, about the authors of haiku or short lyrics, or epigrams, but of the long haul required to produce, at its finest, War and Peace , Paradise Lost or David Copperfield . It is impossible to imagine any of these works being written by an old person. In the case of John Milton, who lived from 1608 to 1674, there is distinct evidence of slowing down after he passed his 60th birthday. The emotional and sexual tempests of his earlier two marriages were followed by a quieter third marriage. The man who was in effect Foreign Secretary in Cromwell's Commonwealth and who had great organizational powers, to the point of being able to dictate an entire epic poem which he had held in his head while going blind, wrote the late work, Samson Agonistes , which is full of good bits, but which is dramatically and linguistically incoherent. It is a mere series of short scenes. Now, evidently Milton did not suffer from Alzheimer's disease, but I mention it to show that in any writing life which lasts beyond the 60th or 65th birthday, there is likely …

Increased oxidative stress and coenzyme Q10 deficiency in centenarians.

Aging populations are expanding worldwide, and the increasing requirement for nursing care has become a serious problem. Furthermore, successful aging is one of the highest priorities for individuals and societies. Centenarians are an informative cohort to study and inflammation has been found to be a key factor in predicting cognition and physical capabilities. Inflammation scores have been determined based on the levels of cytokines and C-reactive protein, however, serum antioxidants and lipid profiles have not been carefully examined. We found that the redox balance of coenzyme Q10 significantly shifted to the oxidized form and levels of strong antioxidants, such as ascorbic acid and unconjugated bilirubin, decreased significantly compared to 76-year-old controls, indicating an increased oxidative stress in centenarians. Levels of uric acid, an endogenous peroxynitrite scavenger, remained unchanged, suggesting that centenarians were experiencing moderate, chronic inflammatory conditions. Centenarians exhibited a hypocholesterolemic condition, while an increase in the ratio of free cholesterol to cholesterol esters suggests some impairment of liver function. Serum free fatty acids and monoenoic acid composition, markers of tissue oxidative damage, were significantly decreased in centenarians, indicating an impairment in the tissue repair system. Despite an elevation of the coenzyme Q10 binding protein Psap, serum total coenzyme Q10 levels decreased in centenarians. This suggests a serious deficiency of coenzyme Q10 in tissues, since tissue levels of coenzyme Q10 significantly decrease with age. Therefore, coenzyme Q10 supplementation could be beneficial for centenarians.

  • Jun 14, 2019
  • Chinese Journal of Geriatrics
  • Yan Li + 7 more

Objective To investigate the characteristics of serum lipid levels in centenarians in Hainan province. Methods A total of 899 centenarians were enrolled.Fasting venous blood samples were collected, and serum levels of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), apolipoprotein A-1(Apo A1), apolipoprotein B(Apo B)and lipoprotein(a)[Lp(a)]were determined.Characteristics of serum lipid levels in centenarians with different age and gender were analyzed. Results The ratio of male to female in this study was 1∶4, 101 years of age comprised the largest proportion(20.4%, 183 cases), and the highest age was 109 years old for men and 116 years old for women.People aged 102 years had the highest levels of TC, TG, LDL-C and Apo B, and also had the lowest levels of HDL-C and Apo A1.Serum levels of TC and LDL-C reached the peak at the age of 102 years and showed downward trends year by year.Serum levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, Apo A1 and Apo B were lower in males than in females(P 0.05). The detection rates for abnormal serum lipid levels were higher in females than in males(P<0.01). Serum Lp(a)level was higher in females than in males. Conclusions Serum lipid levels show a peak expression at a certain age in centenarians of Hainan, and the types and ratio of abnormal blood lipids are higher in female centenarians than in male centenarians. Key words: Centenarians; Blood lipid

Analysis of related factors for clinical characteristics and the outcome in centenarian hospitalized patients
  • Jan 14, 2019
  • Chinese Journal of Geriatrics
  • Yu Wang + 15 more

Objective To investigate the health status of centenarian hospitalized patients and analyze the risk factors for in-hospital death in Nanjing district. Methods All centenarians hospitalized patients who were discharged from wards of 10 upper first-class general hospitals in Nanjing district during the past five years were retrieved from their hospital information systems. Then, a retrospective study was performed on centenarians' data of general information, laboratory test results, Charlson comorbidity index(CCI), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR)and shock index(SI), etc.were calculated and collected.Relevant risk factors for in-hospital death were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 156 patients aged 100 years and over, with an average age of (101.0±2.1)years, were enrolled during the past 5 years. The top 3 admitting diagnosis for the patients were pulmonary infection(30.1%, 47/156 cases), coronary heart disease(10.9%, 17/156 cases)and cerebrovascular disease(7.1%, 11/156 cases). Fifty patients died during hospitalization, with a mortality of 32.1%(50/156). Pneumonia was the most common admitting diagnosis(40.0%, 20/50 case). Among causes of death, the combined admitting diagnosis with dementia, chronic renal insufficiency, one or more basic disease were significantly associated with death. There were statistically significant differences between bad vs.good vs.indifferent prognosis in heart rate, shock index, leukocyte count, neutrophil count, NLR, hemoglobin, albumin, albumin/globulin, fasting blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, C-reactive protein(CRP)and CCI levels.Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that NLR≥13.18, fasting blood glucose ≥7.56 mmol/L, blood urea nitrogen ≥20.74 mmol/L, CRP≥65 mg/L and CCI≥3 might be predictors for in-hospital death in the cohort(OR=48.91、3.43、1.22、6.55、1.55, all P<0.05). Conclusions Pulmonary infection is the most common reason for admission and the cause of death in centenarian inpatients.Comorbidities increase the risk of death. To lower in-hospital mortality, CCI and other assessment indicators should be used to strengthen the comprehensive assessment and chronic disease management of hospitalized centenarians.Infectious diseases should be prevented beforehand.
