Abstract

An experimental model of chronic pancreatitis probably does not exist. Whereas various experimental models of acute pancreatitis have been described (Table 1), chronic pancreatitis has not been consistently produced in experimental animals. Extensive overviews on the experimental models and concepts in acute pancreatitis [1–25, 26] have been published; international workshops on acute experimental pancreatitis have been held [24]. In addition, experimental models of exocrine pancreatic tumor have been developed [8]. As yet, however, no reproducible animal models of chronic pancreatitis have been reported.
