Abstract

The chromosome complement and G- and C-banding patterns of a pelecaniform bird, Phalacrocorax niger, are described. The data on G-banding do not support the theory of broad interordinal homology of macrochromosomes in birds. The homology, if any, in G-banding patterns between Phalacrocorax niger and Pelecanus onocrotalus of the same order can be construed only after assuming centric fusions or fissions together with the addition or deletion of heterochromatin. C-banding shows that P. niger is rich in constitutive heterochromatin. Involvement of a translocation or the presence of more than one class of heterochromatin in the W chromosome also is suggested.
