Abstract

It is good to take stock at the end of a century. This time, the end of the century is also the end of a millennium; so the desirability of taking stock is heightened. At the close of the first millennium of the Christian Era, many expected the end of the world through supernatural apocalypse. There will be some of that expectation again this time. But more of us are concerned about another kind of apocalypse — one brought about by human pressure on planetary systems. In view of the real dangers that our century bequeaths to the next millennium, it behooves us all the more to try to understand who we are.
