Abstract

Summary The volume and composition of bile were studied by cannulation of the common bile duct through a duodenal fistula in dogs with separated antral pouches, cholecystectomy, and either total gastrectomy with Heidenhain pouch or gastrojejunostomy with gastric fistulas. Perfusion of the antral pouch with buffered acetylcholine solution at pH 7.0 caused a choleresis characterized by increased bicarbonate concentration and output, as well as increased gastric acid secretion. These effects were not seen during antral perfusion with acetylcholine chloride solution acidified to pH 1.0. These studies indicate that the antral mucosa is the source of a choleresic substance, and they are consistent with the hypothesis that this substance is gastrin.
