Abstract

This chapter discusses how and why new media have played a central role in Chinese civil society. The first section conceptualizes the concept of citizenship in a Chinese context; then, the chapter uses two separate sections to discuss what and how two kinds of media transitions, as in media mechanism and media technology, are highly related to citizenship development in China. It exploits the “new media empowerment” theory to explain the interactions between media, power, and social change. Lastly, it chooses three typical media events to expound citizenship development during the media evolution.
